There are two kinds of side gusset bags—quad seal and flat bottom bags.

The primary distinction between a quad-seal pouch and a box pouch lies in their bottom design. While quad-seal pouches have a fold-over seal, resulting in a non-flat bottom, the box pouch features a perfectly flat bottom.

The Quad Seal Bag

This traditional pouch design has been in use for a long time and is typically less expensive than the flat bottom pouch to produce.

Quad seal pouches are called so because they have two vertical panels and two gussets. These parts are connected by four vertical seals.This allows the pouch to hold different amounts of product and stand upright on a shelf. Because they are sealed on four vertical sides, the quad seal pouch is reinforced and strong, making it ideal for bulk fills of product.

However, a drawback of this design is that the fold-over bottom is effective when the bag is full and heavy, ensuring stability. They become less stable as product quantity decreases, particularly for heavier items like pet food. To enhance stability, quad-seal pouches are often designed to lay flat.
